Imagine waking up the day after your breast augmentation. You’re still a bit groggy from surgery, but you are so excited to get a better look at your new chest. You sneak a peek and…they’re square. And hard. And sit really high. And are swollen in weird ways.
This might sound like the story of cosmetic surgery gone wrong. But don’t worry—this is normal.
Initial Results Aren’t Final Results
Results take time. Don’t judge your breast augmentation based on what you see in the days after surgery.
There are two main reasons that what you see the day after getting implants doesn’t reflect the new profile you will ultimately enjoy.
Swelling
After most surgical procedures, your body will swell. This is also true with breast implants. Swelling might make your breasts seem oddly shaped or cause your skin to feel tight.
The “Drop and Fluff” Process
This refers to how the implant settles into the “pocket” where it has been placed. The breast pocket needs to stretch over time to accommodate your new implants. Once your implants “drop and fluff”, they will settle into their final position on your chest wall, looking and feeling softer and more natural.
Breast implants typically start to drop and fluff within days after your breast augmentation, though this process can take around six weeks before your breasts begin to look and feel more natural. Keep in mind that it can take up to six months to see your final results, so remain patient and understand that breast augmentation recovery timelines are different from results timelines.
