Stretch marks are a frustrating cosmetic problem for lots of people – in fact, around 90% of the general population has some amount of stretch marks. In the past, options for getting rid of stretch marks were limited, and topical creams and ointments haven’t had a great track record of effectiveness.
Thanks to medical advancements in recent decades, however, you now have several effective stretch mark treatment options that don’t require surgery. In particular, Dr. Koehler has seen great results with a type of laser stretch mark treatment called Lumenis® Photofractional™. Take a closer look at how this treatment option works to reduce stretch marks and what you might be able to expect for your own results.
What Causes Stretch Marks?
Stretch marks develop when your skin rapidly stretches or shrinks, causing the collagen and elastin fibers that give your skin its structure and elasticity to break down. This breakdown leads to scarring, resulting in the visible lines or marks you see on your skin. Stretch marks can range in color from red or purple, usually when they first form, to silver or white as they mature.
Genetics, hormonal changes, pregnancy, weight fluctuations and some medical conditions can all contribute to the likelihood of developing stretch marks and how prominently they might appear. While stretch marks aren’t harmful, many people want to get rid of them for cosmetic reasons and to improve self-esteem.
How Does Laser Stretch Mark Removal Work?
Lumenis Photofractional laser stretch mark removal combines two different types of lasers: IPL (intense pulsed light) and non-ablative skin resurfacing. The IPL treatment is able to improve skin discoloration caused by stretch marks, creating a more even skin tone. Skin resurfacing is able to reach the deeper layers of skin, where it can stimulate new collagen production, creating a smoother overall skin texture in place of stretch marks.
One standout feature of Lumenis Photofacial stretch mark treatment is that it can effectively treat both old and new stretch marks, since it treats both uneven skin tone and texture.
Stretch Mark Treatment Results: What to Expect
Many of our patients are able to see a noticeable reduction in the appearance of stretch marks after a single laser stretch mark treatment. However, most people will need anywhere from 3 to 5 treatment sessions to achieve maximum results. These treatments are spaced 2 to 6 weeks apart and results will compound after each one – so you will see fewer and fewer signs of stretch marks with each appointment.
Depending on the location, size and severity of your stretch marks, you might see final results anywhere from six weeks to six months after your initial treatment. We will be able to give you a personalized stretch mark treatment timeline after evaluating the area(s) that you would like to treat and listening to your specific goals.
