Although the term” 20-minute facelift” is trending now, this technique isn’t new. You might be familiar with the terms “lunchtime lift” or “thread lift” instead. These all mean the same thing: a minimally invasive facelift alternative using dissolvable threads.
So is this “20-minute” facelift alternative worth it? How does it work, and what type of results can you expect? Dr. Koehler answers some of the most common questions about nonsurgical vs. surgical facelifts here.
What Is a 20-Minute Facelift?
A 20-minute facelift, or thread lift, is a nonsurgical anti-aging procedure that uses dissolvable treads, or sutures, to lift and reposition loose skin. This procedure is typically performed in well under an hour, hence the term “20-minute facelift.”
The threads are inserted under the skin using a needle and then gently pulled to create a lifting effect. Over the next several months, those threads dissolve and collagen production builds, providing results that can last for about 1 to 2 years.
Are There Downsides to a 20-Minute Facelift?
While the thought of a nonsurgical facelift alternative is intriguing to many people, there are some notable limitations to consider. First, nonsurgical “20-minute” facelift results are not nearly as long-lasting as a traditional facelift, so this procedure would typically need to be redone every 1 to 2 years to maintain those same results.
Secondly, thread lifts and other facelift alternatives are not the right choice for everyone. Women and men with more pronounced wrinkles, creases and skin laxity are not likely to see satisfactory results with a nonsurgical facelift alternative.
Lastly, the “lunchtime lift” or “20-minute facelift” can in some cases cause a dimpling or intended effect on the skin. This occurs when the threads are placed too close to the surface of the skin, when the cones on the threads catch onto tissue they weren’t supposed to or when a thread lift is performed on a patient with significant skin laxity.
When Should You Consider Facelift Surgery?
If you have moderate to significant wrinkles, creases or sagging skin in the lower face and neck areas, a surgical facelift will most likely be the most effective treatment. Nonsurgical alternatives like thread lifts are not designed to address significant skin laxity or wrinkles and can come with unwanted effects if performed on skin with poor elasticity.
For those who have tried nonsurgical anti-aging treatments like thread lifts, injectables, lasers or others but are no longer seeing the same level of results, this could also be a sign that a longer-term solution like a facelift could make the most sense.
