During your abdominoplasty research, you may have come across certain BMI requirements for a tummy tuck.
While these guidelines can be helpful to give you a ballpark idea of whether or not you might be a good candidate for this procedure, there are some other factors that can sway you and your cosmetic surgeon’s decision one way or another.
Understanding BMI
BMI, or body mass index, is a measurement of your weight with respect to your height. It is calculated using the equation: weight(lbs)/[height (in)]2 x 703.
- BMIs of 18.5 to 25 are normal
- BMIs between 25 and 30 are overweight
- BMIs higher than 30 are obese
Most cosmetic surgeons do not recommend getting a tummy tuck or other cosmetic procedures if you currently have a BMI of 30 or greater, as this may increase the risk of complications during and after surgery.
Why BMI Matters, But Isn’t the Last Word
You will see the best tummy tuck results if you are already close to your ideal weight prior to surgery.
Knowing your BMI can help you gauge your body’s overall level of physical fitness and health, but it can be skewed in certain instances. For example, someone with a high muscle mass will have a higher BMI, even though they are in great physical health.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, the BMI of an overweight or obese person who is shorter than average can downplay the health risks associated with this person’s excess weight.
Bottom Line
If you’re concerned about your BMI but are thinking about getting a tummy tuck, the best place to start is with a cosmetic surgery consultation. Not only will you learn whether or not you’re a good candidate at the moment, but you can also work with your cosmetic surgeon to develop a weight loss plan and timeline if needed.
