Though you are probably anxious to see your final results immediately after getting liposuction, swelling can take several months to diminish. So don’t feel discouraged if you still see signs of residual swelling months after your procedure — this is to be expected and should continue to improve over time.
Learn more below about how long swelling lasts after liposuction and how to reduce swelling after your procedure.
Swelling 2 to 3 Months after Liposuction
You’ll need to refrain from intense physical activity for several weeks after getting liposuction to optimize the healing process.
The majority of swelling after liposuction takes 2 to 3 months to gradually diminish, revealing close to your final results around the 3-month mark. During this time, follow Dr. Koehler’s recovery guidelines as closely as possible to help your body heal as efficiently as possible.
Swelling 6 Months and Beyond
Around 10% of swelling can linger for around 6 to 9 months after liposuction. While you should have an excellent idea of what your final liposuction results will look like around the 6-month point, know that some very mild swelling may still be present.
Tips for Reducing Swelling after Lipo
Some of the best things you can do during liposuction recovery to help reduce swelling include:
- Wearing a compression garment
- Moving around the house or going for light walks
- Applying cold compresses
- Performing lymphatic drainage massages if directed to do so by Dr. Koehler
- Avoiding very salty foods
