If you’re thinking about getting laser skin treatments and are wondering if the summer is the right time, we’ve got good news: yes, you absolutely can get laser treatments during the summer. It is true, though, that you might have to take a few extra precautions when getting summer laser treatments to get the best results and minimize complications like hyperpigmentation.
Limit Sun Exposure
One of the most important things you can do before and after laser skin treatments is to stay out of the sun. Exposure to the sun’s UV rays after laser treatments can increase the risk of hyperpigmentation and slow down the healing process. Additionally, if you are getting laser hair removal, you will need to avoid getting a tan so that the laser can distinguish between the pigment in your hair and skin to effectively target unwanted hair.
Put a Pause on Self-Tanners
Speaking of tanning, the same advice goes for sunless tanning lotions: you will need to stop using these types of products before and in between laser skin treatments. This will help to ensure optimal results and reduce the risk of burns or hyperpigmentation, as self-tanners create a pigmented layer on top of your skin, which can make it difficult for lasers to properly treat the targeted skin or hair. For best results, stop using sunless tanning products at least two weeks before your appointment.
Wear Sunscreen
If you are going to be outdoors before, during or after laser treatments, make sure you wear sunscreen and sun-protective clothing. While it’s always important to keep your skin protected from the sun, laser-treated skin is even more susceptible to sun damage. Even minimal sun exposure can interfere with your results and potentially cause complications.
If you can, try to stay indoors during the peak hours of 10am to 4pm. If you are outside, especially during these hours, make sure you reapply sunscreen at least every two hours or wear UV-protective clothing.
Keep Your Skin Hydrated
Hydrated skin responds better to laser treatments and can heal more efficiently. We will give you recommendations on gentle moisturizers that you can use after laser skin treatments to help keep your skin smooth, hydrated and comfortable. Additionally, make sure you are drinking enough water to keep your body hydrated during hot summer months.
Follow Prep Instructions to a T
Whether you’re getting laser treatments this summer or waiting for the fall or winter, following your provider’s skin prep instructions as closely as possible is going to be key to seeing the results you want. Depending on the type of laser treatment you’re getting, these guidelines might include items like not shaving or waxing before laser hair removal, avoiding using certain skin care products or ingredients and/or coming to your appointment with clean, makeup-free skin.
