MiraDry® is a popular non-invasive treatment used to effectively reduce excessive underarm sweating, medically referred to as hyperhidrosis. Although this is a fairly quick and easy nonsurgical procedure, many people have questions about what they can expect before, during and after their MiraDry appointment. Here, Dr. Koehler sheds some light on what you can expect at every step along the way.
Preparing for Your MiraDry Appointment
The first step to take in preparation for MiraDry treatments is to have a consultation with Dr. Koehler. During this time, Dr. Koehler will go over your medical history with you, listen to your specific concerns and expectations and perform a physical examination. This is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you might have about MiraDry, such as how it works, what you can expect during and after your appointment and when you can expect to see results.
Dr. Koehler may ask that you avoid shaving or otherwise removing hair from your underarms for a few days prior to your MiraDry appointment. On the day of your appointment, wear comfortable clothing and skip applying deodorant.
During Your MiraDry Treatment
On the day of your MiraDry treatment, the first step will be to clean and prep your underarm area. This involves marking your underarms for more precise targeting, as well as applying a local anesthetic to the area. The MiraDry device will then be applied to your skin, where it can deliver thermal energy to eliminate the targeted sweat glands. Most people report feeling a mild suction or warming sensation during this process. It can take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours to fully treat both underarms.
After MiraDry Treatments
Directly after your MiraDry treatment, you can expect to experience some redness, swelling and tenderness in the treated area. These symptoms are normal and should subside on their own over the next few days. Applying ice packs and taking over-the-counter medication can help to minimize any discomfort as these symptoms gradually improve.
Dr. Koehler will send you home with detailed aftercare guidelines, such as avoiding very hot showers, vigorous activities and applying deodorants or other skincare products to your underarms until the skin has healed. Follow these guidelines as closely as possible and be sure to keep your follow-up appointment to check on your progress and any next steps Dr. Koehler may recommend. In some cases, a second MiraDry treatment may be necessary to maximize your results. However, some people see an optimal result after a single treatment session.
While you should notice a reduction in sweat directly after getting MiraDry, your final results can take several weeks to develop. Many of Dr. Koehler’s patients report experiencing a boost of self-confidence and a significant improvement in their quality of life after getting MiraDry.
