Sometimes the earliest signs of aging are the most upsetting, especially those fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and brow area. Frown lines and crow’s feet are known as dynamic wrinkles, and develop as a result of the repetitive muscle movement that occurs when making normal, everyday facial expressions. BOTOX® Cosmetic offers a nonsurgical solution that can help men and women look years younger simply by allowing facial muscles to relax, which in turn erases the resulting dynamic wrinkles.
Recognized as a skilled BOTOX® Cosmetic injector and one of the top cosmetic surgeons in the Mobile-Pensacola metro area, Dr. James Koehler is a board certified cosmetic surgeon serving patients from Gulfport to Gulf Shores and beyond. Dr. Koehler offers a wide range of medical spa and plastic surgery procedures for both men and women, and is known for his caring commitment to a patient-first approach.
Are You a Candidate?
If you’ve recently noticed the development of wrinkles at the outer corners of the eyes (crow’s feet), vertical lines between the brows (frown lines) or horizontal forehead lines, BOTOX® Cosmetic injections may be able to help. Men and women considering BOTOX® should be in good physical and mental health, and have realistic expectations about their results.
Although known as a quick, effective treatment that can help you look younger and more refreshed, BOTOX® doesn’t add volume when injected, and won’t improve the appearance of sagging skin. Some wrinkles, like the laugh lines around the mouth, are caused by age-related volume loss rather than muscle movement, and are better treated with dermal fillers, while more advanced aging may require facial cosmetic surgery. Dr. Koehler will discuss treatment choices with you in more detail at your consultation.

About BOTOX® Cosmetic
Facial muscles are attached to the overlying skin, so the skin bunches together every time muscles contract. This movement forms lines in the skin over time, most commonly above the eyebrows, across the forehead and at the outer corners of the eyes. When injected directly into the muscles, BOTOX® blocks the nerve signals telling the facial muscles to contract into expressions like smiling or frowning. As a result, the treated muscles are weakened or paralyzed, which allows both muscles and skin to settle into a smooth, unlined appearance.
BOTOX® is commonly used to treat visible signs of aging, but an increasing number of men and women are looking into BOTOX® as a preventative treatment to help limit the formation of those dynamic wrinkles in the first place. Dr. Koehler will talk about both of these options with you during your consultation so you can learn more about how BOTOX® works and whether it’s right for you.
What to Expect
During your consultation, Dr. Koehler will ask you about your appearance concerns and explain the target areas that he feels will be most effective in meeting your goals. He’ll also explain what you can expect during your treatment and talk about the results you’re likely to see.
Because BOTOX® is completely nonsurgical, patients can enjoy treatment as a very brief outpatient procedure that can even be completed over a lunch break. Additionally, since there’s no downtime afterwards, your appointment can be scheduled at a time that’s convenient for you without concerns over having to take time off work or away from your daily routine.
At your appointment time, Dr. Koehler will ask you to make several facial expressions, which allows him to examine your facial muscles in order to determine where to place the BOTOX® injections for the best results. Next, the product is injected into the targeted areas. Dr. Koehler uses several techniques so that you feel little to no discomfort during this procedure.
After your session, you can simply return to life as normal, making sure to keep your head upright for the first 4 hours following your appointment. Rarely, you may notice a bit of blood at the injection site, and some patients experience minor swelling or bruising. However, these side effects are very rare when BOTOX® is administered by an experienced injector.
Risks and Complications
BOTOX® Cosmetic is considered a very low-risk procedure, especially when injections are performed by a cosmetic surgeon with a great deal of technical expertise. It’s possible, although rare, for some patients to have an unanticipated response to BOTOX® such as droopy eyelids, headaches or other negative reactions. Dr. Koehler will discuss all the risks and benefits associated with BOTOX® during your consultation so you can feel fully prepared about what to expect.
Your New Look
You should see the results of your BOTOX® treatment within a few days to a week. Visible wrinkles in the treated area should soften significantly or disappear entirely, leaving you looking rested and refreshed yet very natural. The effects of BOTOX® are temporary, and generally last anywhere from 3 to 4 months before they gradually fade away. Dr. Koehler and his staff can work with you to schedule ongoing treatment sessions at regular intervals to maintain your new look long-term.
BOTOX® FAQs
How do I choose a BOTOX provider near me?
Word-of-mouth referrals from friends, family and coworkers in your area are a great way to find reputable BOTOX providers near you. Before and after photos should be available on the provider’s website to help you gauge the experience level of the injector and the quality of results you might be able to expect. Once you’ve narrowed down your search, schedule a consultation to make your final decision.
Is BOTOX the best cosmetic treatment for me?
BOTOX can be an effective solution for lines and wrinkles on your forehead, between your eyebrows and at the corners of your eyes. BOTOX injections may also help to reduce the appearance of a drooping brow and other similar cosmetic concerns. However, for more severe brow or eyelid drooping, a surgical brow lift or eyelid lift may be the most appropriate solution. Dr. Koehler can help you decide if nonsurgical BOTOX or surgical alternatives could be right for you.
Does BOTOX hurt?
Most people report that BOTOX is a fairly comfortable procedure, as the needles are very small. Topical numbing creams can be applied to the treatment area prior to BOTOX injections to maximize your comfort. Immediately after getting BOTOX, you may experience some tenderness, swelling and bruising, but these side effects typically wear away on their own fairly quickly.
How far in advance should I get BOTOX before an event?
Schedule your BOTOX appointment at least two weeks before an important event. It can take around two weeks for swelling and bruising to fully diminish, and it may take some time for BOTOX to settle into place so you can see your final results.
How long does BOTOX last?
BOTOX usually lasts for 3 to 6 months, although this can vary based on how quickly your body metabolizes the product, your lifestyle habits and other factors. To help prolong your BOTOX results, follow your provider’s aftercare instructions as closely as possible, which may include not vigorously rubbing the treated area and avoiding strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours after your appointment.
Will I need to take off work after getting BOTOX?
No, you should be able to get back to work and other daily activities directly after your BOTOX appointment. However, Dr. Koehler recommends avoiding strenuous exercise for the first day or so after getting BOTOX to ensure optimal results. Swelling, bruising and tenderness should begin to diminish over the next several days following injections.
