Dynamic wrinkles are caused by repeated muscle movements that cause the skin to fold up as the muscles contract. Over time, this causes permanent lines in the skin simply as a result of making normal facial expressions like smiling or frowning. For those men and women who wish to correct the appearance of dynamic wrinkles like crow’s feet, frown lines or forehead wrinkles, Dysport® can provide an excellent alternative to BOTOX® Cosmetic injections. Dysport® is injected directly into the muscles responsible, temporarily paralyzing or weakening them so that the skin’s surface can smooth into a more youthful, unlined appearance.
Recognized as a skilled Dysport® injector and one of the top cosmetic surgeons in the Mobile-Pensacola metro area, Dr. James Koehler is a board certified cosmetic surgeon serving patients from Gulfport to Gulf Shores and beyond. Dr. Koehler offers a wide range of medical spa and plastic surgery procedures for both men and women, and is known for his caring commitment to a patient-first approach.
Are You a Candidate?
If you’ve recently noticed the development of crow’s feet, the wrinkles at the outer corners of the eyes, or frown lines, which are the vertical lines between the brows, you may be a good candidate for Dysport® injections. Dysport® can also help minimize horizontal lines running across the forehead. Men and women considering Dysport® should be in good physical and mental health, and have realistic expectations about their results.
Although Dysport® does provide a fast, effective solution for wrinkles that are caused by muscle movement, deeper lines that are the results of volume loss will require dermal fillers instead. It’s very common to combine Dysport® with other injectables for more comprehensive results that leave you looking younger and more vibrant.

About Dysport®
Dysport®, like BOTOX®, is a formulation of botulinum toxin that temporarily paralyzes the muscles at the treatment site to smooth away fine lines and wrinkles. Although Dysport® is very similar to BOTOX®, there are some differences between the two products that may make one more preferable in some cases. Primarily, many report that Dysport® takes effect more quickly and may last a bit longer. Additionally, some patients may simply respond more positively to Dysport®, even if BOTOX® delivered reliable results for them in the past.
In addition to treating existing wrinkles, regular Dysport® injections can be started at a younger age to help prevent dynamic wrinkles from forming in the first place. Dr. Koehler will talk about all the possible options with you during your consultation so you can learn more about how Dysport® works and whether it’s right for you.
What to Expect
At your initial consultation, Dr. Koehler will talk with you about your cosmetic goals and explain the treatment options and target areas that he feels will give you the best results from Dysport®. Dr. Koehler will also explain what you can expect during your procedure and talk about the outcome you’re likely to see.
Since Dysport® is nonsurgical, men and women will often schedule a treatment session right over their lunch break before immediately returning to work and their normal daily routine. With no recovery or downtime required after Dysport®, appointments can be scheduled at any time that’s most convenient for you.
At your treatment session, Dr. Koehler will begin by asking you to make your normal facial expressions so he can study the way your facial muscles contract in order to plan the most effective placement for your Dysport® injections. Next, the product is injected directly into the targeted muscles. While the injections typically result in little to no discomfort for most patients, those who are more sensitive may request a topical anesthetic.
Once injections are completed, you can simply get right back to your normal daily activities, just making sure to keep your head upright for the first few hours after your session. Rarely, you may notice a bit of blood or bruising at the injection site if the needle punctures a small blood vessel, but this occurs infrequently and any discoloration can be covered by makeup. Any potential side effects from Dysport® are minimized by choosing an experienced injector for your treatment.
Dysport® Costs
The cost for Dysport® injections from our practice is $4/unit, so your total will vary depending on the level of correction needed, the size of the area being treated, your specific goals and whether additional procedures are performed at the same time. Although Dysport® is less per unit than BOTOX® Cosmetic, more product may be needed to achieve the same results, so the total price for either treatment may be close to the same. Dr. Koehler and his staff are happy to answer any questions you may have about cosmetic procedure pricing and help you fully understand the costs associated with Dysport®.

Risks and Complications
Dysport® is considered a very low-risk procedure, especially when injections are performed by a cosmetic surgeon with a great deal of technical expertise. It’s possible, although rare, for some patients to have an unanticipated response to Dysport® such as flu symptoms, headaches or other negative reactions. Dr. Koehler will discuss all the risks and benefits associated with BOTOX® during your consultation so you can feel fully prepared about what to expect.
Your New Look
One of the benefits of Dysport® is that the results can be apparent very quickly, often visible within a day or two. Lines and wrinkles in the target area should look softer or smooth away entirely so you feel refreshed and well-rested without looking “done.” Since the results of Dysport® are temporary and fade naturally away after a few months, Dr. Koehler and his staff can work with you to schedule ongoing treatment sessions at regular intervals to maintain your new look long-term.
Dysport FAQs
How long does it take to administer Dysport?
The exact amount of time it takes to complete the procedure will vary based on the area being treated and how much prep work is needed. However, most people are in and out in about 30 minutes.
How fast will I see results from Dysport?
Each person responds differently to treatment. However, most people will see improvement in the treated area within 3 days. Most notice a difference before leaving the office.
How long will Dysport results last?
This depends on your metabolism. For some, results last just a few months, while others find their results maintain for 6 months or more.
How can I be sure my Dysport is authentic?
If you are concerned about the authenticity of your product, ask your provider to show you the packaging so you can be certain it is authentic. The packaging should feature the full product name and the seal on the Dysport should be intact. Of course, you should only seek treatment from qualified providers.
Are there reasons I should avoid Dysport treatment?
The primary reason to avoid Dysport treatment is if you are allergic to any ingredients in the product. Those who are allergic to the protein in cow’s milk should also avoid treatment. Finally, if you have an active skin infection at or around the planned injection site, you should delay treatment until this is properly resolved. It also is not approved for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women or children.
How frequently can I get Dysport injections?
While it can feel tempting to get injections more frequently to ensure you do not show signs of aging, Dysport should not be used more often than every 90 days. Dysport is considered safe to use long term, but only if the procedures are spaced far enough apart.
Should I talk to my primary doctor before getting Dysport?
It is always a good idea to consult with your general doctor prior to cosmetic treatment. This is especially true if you have any complex medical conditions, especially those that are neurological in nature. However, this is not a replacement for disclosing any conditions you have to the Dysport provider. You should be open and honest with them so they can be certain treatment is safe for you.
Can I get Dysport if I have already had BOTOX?
If you have gotten BOTOX treatment in the past, this does not prevent you from being treated with Dysport. You should wait at least 90 days since your last injection, though. If you had any adverse reactions to BOTOX, be certain to disclose these to your provider before being treated with Dysport.
Is Dysport a new product?
No. Dysport has been approved for use in the United States since April 2009, which means there is more than a decade of use behind the product in addition to the clinical studies that preceded its release.
