With age and exposure to environmental toxins and other cell-damaging factors, the skin can become dull and develop uneven pigmentation or a rough texture. Laser skin resurfacing removes the outermost layer of skin cells to reveal the healthy, vibrant skin below for a look that’s revitalized and has a youthful glow. Laser resurfacing can also improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as minimize the appearance of acne scars or other complexion imperfections.
Recognized as a skilled laser resurfacing technician and one of the top cosmetic surgeons in the Mobile-Pensacola metro area, Dr. James Koehler is a board certified cosmetic surgeon serving patients from Gulfport to Gulf Shores and beyond. Are You a Candidate?
Laser resurfacing can help improve the appearance of a number of skin concerns, including wrinkles, freckles and age spots, as well as enhancing overall skin tone and texture. Either men or women can make excellent candidates for laser skin resurfacing if they’re in good physical and mental health and have realistic expectations about their results.
While laser resurfacing can help you look younger, additional med spa treatments like dermal fillers may be recommended for very deep lines and wrinkles. Alternatively, Dr. Koehler may suggest facial cosmetic surgery rather than laser resurfacing for those patients with more advanced signs of aging such as noticeably lax or sagging skin.
Educated at the University of Alabama and in practice for over 15 years, Dr. Koehler is a board-certified cosmetic surgeon who is devoted to providing exceptional results.
About Laser Skin Resurfacing
There are a number of different factors that contribute to the skin’s health and appearance, from lifestyle habits like smoking to the amount of cumulative sun exposure your skin cells have absorbed over your lifetime. Laser resurfacing uses focused light energy to create controlled injury on the skin’s surface, removing the damaged skin cells to promote the body’s natural healing processes. This causes a boost in collagen production along with new cell growth.
Laser resurfacing can be ideal for helping to reverse the early signs of facial aging, repairing blotchy pigmentation or melasma and minimizing the visibility of facial scars. Treatments can be performed as an outpatient procedure during a relatively short appointment time, and downtime is minimal. Although laser resurfacing can deliver dramatic improvement on its own, Dr. Koehler may recommend including additional med spa treatments for even more impressive results. It’s also important to realize that more advanced signs of aging, such as sagging through the jowls or droopy eyelids, may require cosmetic facial surgery rather than laser resurfacing to correct.
Laser Skin Resurfacing Costs
The price range for laser skin resurfacing from our practice averages from $1,500 to $4,500, although this amount may vary depending on your specific goals and whether additional procedures are performed at the same time. Dr. Koehler and his staff are happy to answer any questions you may have about cosmetic procedure pricing and help you fully understand the costs associated with laser resurfacing.
What to Expect
At your consultation, Dr. Koehler will ask questions about your goals for laser resurfacing and explain the benefits and limitations of the procedure. He’ll also go into more detail about what you can expect during your appointment as well as the results you can hope to see.
Depending on the depth of peel, laser resurfacing can be done awake in the office for more superficial peels or asleep in the operating room for deeper ablative laser resurfacing. Dr. Koehler will advise you during your consultation which approach would be better suited for you.
Dr. Koehler will pass the laser device over the treatment area in a precise fashion to ensure consistent depth of treatment for the most optimum results. Although one session may be enough to see marked improvement in the appearance of your skin, some candidates may undergo a few more sessions for a more comprehensive level of correction.
The recovery period for fractionated office based CO2 resurfacing is relatively short. After your session, you can return to your normal routine, although you may notice some mild swelling or redness in the first 24 hours following laser resurfacing. This can often be disguised by makeup. The old, damaged skin cells will gradually slough away, revealing firm, healthy skin that’s radiant and rejuvenated.
For ablative deep laser peels, you will be unable to wear makeup for 7 to 10 days and will likely not want to be out in public. Although there is more down time with the deeper peels, the results are also more dramatic. Generally after one week the area can be covered with make-up. Your skin may be light pink in color for weeks to months as it heals completely. The laser stimulates the body to form new collagen that will continue to form for several months. Deeper laser resurfacing can produce very dramatic changes in skin texture as will as fine lines and wrinkles.
Risks and Complications
There are risks associated with laser resurfacing, including a possible darkening in skin color (hyperpigmentation) or lightening of the skin (hypopigmentation). Swelling and redness are possible with milder peels and very common with the deeper peels, but only temporary. Of greater concern is the chance of infection, blistering or scarring, although these issues are rare when laser skin resurfacing is performed by an experienced practitioner. Medications are often prescribed to reduce the risks of viral and bacterial infections as well as pigment changes in the skin. Dr. Koehler will discuss all the risks and benefits associated with laser skin resurfacing during your consultation so that you’re fully informed well before your appointment.
Your New Look
After laser resurfacing, your complexion should look clearer, brighter and luminous. Dark spots like freckles should appear faint or faded, while irregularities such as facial scars should look less visible. Although your skin will continue to age normally in the future, laser skin resurfacing can make existing lines and wrinkles less noticeable as well as improve the health of your skin cells. You can expect to enjoy the results of your procedure long-term.
